2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Producer to Boost Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Reception

Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed team members about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a more defined vision.

Ismailer noted that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

The news mirrors a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.

Here is the full content from the president's announcement:

Team—

I understand you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most driven and innovative designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s the game demo was revealing. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It revealed the requirement for a sharper identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the feedback to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to fulfill its promise to our players.

The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of 31st Union. After a period of conversations, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having spent the recent years creating and managing some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in welcoming him soon. We are all eager to persist observing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to come.

David

Background of the Incoming Leader

The appointee currently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.

Title Details and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in last year in conjunction with a early access event. At the time, the developers portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description reads. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, risks, and obstacles that change every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or take a risk, risk it all, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."

The game does not have an announced release date or supported systems, but players can look forward to further news as creation continues.
