Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
